COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Four Proctor High School DECA students launched the Love In A Basket project to support new moms by providing diapers, bottles, and postpartum essentials (they raised $2,500 through grocery bagging and hockey fundraising), with ten baskets delivered to Safe Haven and plans to complete 25 baskets soon.  WDIO

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A cabin on Meads Island in Greenwood Township was declared a total loss after a fire on Wednesday afternoon when a caretaker started the furnace then left — fire officials say no one was inside and the incident is under investigation but not suspicious.  WDIO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UMD has updated its dining services with a remodeled kitchen featuring smart ovens and automated systems to serve fresh food 24+7 during welcome week. A grand opening is scheduled today at the Kirby Student Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  WDIO
  • The University of Wisconsin-Superior earned its Carnegie Community Engagement Classification for the second year, affirming its strong community partnerships in teaching, research, and service. Chancellor Renée Wachter said the award solidifies the campus’s role as a regional hub — driving real-world learning and community engagement.  WDIO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Minnesota judges will perform free weddings on Valentine’s Day in 10 district courts, including Duluth, on Thursday, Feb. 12 and Friday, Feb. 13. Couples must register ahead and have a valid marriage license before their ceremony.  WDIO

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors in the Northland report a sharp rise in flu cases driven by a new flu A strain and fewer vaccinations; emergency rooms saw twice as many visits last month, and they urge residents to wash hands and update vaccines if symptoms persist.  WDIO
