CULTURE NEWS

  • Duluth Mayor Roger Reinert announced yesterday that the Lyric Opera of the North is this year’s artists in residence and will perform free monthly at City Hall Rotunda; next shows are set for Feb. 11 and Mar. 6 (at noon).  WDIO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • While more than 80 million tourists visit Minnesota yearly, Explore Minnesota expects short-term travel declines and has paused marketing efforts amid recent negative publicity from globally broadcast events. The Beaumont family, visiting for a hockey tournament, noted no disruptions in their trip (they only saw expected rink ice).  KSTP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. House voted to reverse a 2023 mining ban on 225,000 acres near the Boundary Waters in Northern Minnesota. Proponents say the change will unlock hardrock mining and helium projects — while critics warn it risks protecting cherished wilderness areas; the resolution now moves to the U.S. Senate.  WDIO
  • Federal child care funding is set to freeze tomorrow, leaving Duluth centers unsure if they face staff cutbacks and higher costs for families. Senator Grant Hauschild (a local advocate) visited centers Wednesday to voice concerns about potential job losses and fewer benefits.  WDIO

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Developers requested rezoning to allow greater building flexibility for a proposed town home project in Duluth Heights when the Planning Commission approved an amendment Wednesday night + the proposal now moves to the City Council for further review.  WDIO
