COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Northern Lights Foundation launched the Shimia Nord Legacy Grant in March (Kidney Cancer Awareness Month) to honor a Duluth East graduate who died of cancer in Sept. 2025. The annual $5,000 award will support families with a seriously ill child, with recipients announced each October. WDIO
- ➤ In the 1970s, as asbestos in Lake Superior water raised concerns, WDIO offered free well water from its spigot (a community measure) to local residents while the EPA took legal action against the Reserve Mining Company; cleanup efforts continue today as a reminder of our town's resilience. WDIO
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Duluth Public Schools cut $4.2 million for the 2026-2027 school year to close a general fund gap; district reductions include $1.25 million at the district level and similar cuts at secondary and elementary schools — displacement notices will begin after spring break. WDIO
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Despite the government shutdown affecting pay, the Duluth Airport Authority launched a donation drive to support TSA workers at Duluth International Airport. Donations including food, gas cards, and cleaning supplies will be accepted at the DAA office (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) until April 3. WDIO

- ➤ Diabetes Alert Day urges adults 35 and older in Northland to get screened to catch early signs of diabetes, as medical experts say early detection can reverse prediabetes.
