Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 9th of April.
Good morning, Duluth.
Minnesota Education Commissioner Willie Jett said he rejects the federal request for Minnesota schools to certify that they have no illegal DEI practices and warned the new demand would change funding rules without proper process— a change that could harm vulnerable students.
Since Tuesday, the Minnesota DNR placed burn restrictions on several counties as warm, dry weather raised wildfire risks, and it will extend these rules to more areas beginning April 14.
The restrictions bar open burning of brush and yard waste to help keep wildfires in check—officials say the measure lowers accidental fire risks.
A University of Minnesota report shows Minnesota's 65+ population is nearing one million while senior care providers in Duluth and the Northland region face challenges with rising demand, staffing, and Medicaid issues (for example, Keystone Bluffs in Duluth can serve up to 100 residents). Local groups are meeting quarterly (via the Northland Senior Care Network) to plan better support for aging Minnesotans.
