COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Duluth will host Get Downtown Week—presented by Bremer Bank—from April 21 to April 26. A record 39 local businesses will offer special promotions to welcome customers downtown.  BusinessNorth

CRIME NEWS

  • Duluth police, Hermantown police and the Lake Superior Violent Offender Task Force arrested a 63-year-old man on Tuesday, April 15 after a traffic stop and seized 140 grams of suspected meth, 102 grams of cocaine and nearly $5,000 from him, and a search of his home on the 700 block of North 7th Avenue East yielded ammunition, digital scales and evidence of drug sales—he now faces charges for first degree sale of meth, first degree sale of cocaine and felon in possession of ammunition—.  WDIO

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center completed a new ground-mounted 20-kilowatt solar array east of the museum with support from the City of Superior—this array is Phase I of a project to cut energy costs. Solar United Neighbors Minnesota launched its northernmost solar co-op for local homeowners, farmers, and small businesses that will host in-person and online sessions throughout spring and early summer.  WDIO
  • The Minnesota DNR is studying sturgeon on the St. Louis River by catching, measuring and tagging them after decades of habitat restoration. The agency and its partners, including local groups and the Great Lakes Aquarium, will seek $1 million in funding to help the naturally reproducing population grow.  Superior Telegram

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today the Duluth Transit Authority announced plans to boost bus frequency and efficiency starting on June 1 by adding nine new buses with bike racks and secure wheelchair systems; Route 103 will connect downtown and Spirit Valley faster — while Blue Line trips will run more often as part of these changes backed by state and federal agencies. Additional route adjustments will help keep transfers smooth across the system.  WDIO

  • Ariana Sleen was very ill and needed a ventilator before she was treated in the ICU at Essentia Health St. Mary's Medical Center. She got married there after her health improved—she was 29 weeks pregnant and her baby is due in June.  WDIO
