  • On Tuesday, April 21, the Junior League of Duluth awarded $45,195 in grants to 14 local nonprofits (including Witness Child Advocacy Center and Bright Water Health) at a grant reception following its Festival of Trees fundraiser. The funds underline the organization’s 105-year commitment to supporting the community.  WDIO

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday afternoon a grass fire near Sheldon Road in Ellsburg Township burned a few outbuildings but left homes unharmed, and the DNR is investigating the cause while authorities confirmed that a female caller faces charges for negligent behavior.  WDIO

  • Six regional businesses will be honored at the 2026 Distinction Awards on May 7 at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center in the Lake Superior Ballroom – where panel discussions, an awards ceremony and a Night Market will connect local business leaders.  BusinessNorth

  • At Rock Ridge, six professionals from healthcare, business and law enforcement inspired about 50 young women at the fifth Dream It, Be It event Tuesday - the biggest one in the series. The panel shared career journeys and stressed that learning never stops.  WDIO

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Pelicans were spotted Tuesday at Chambers Grove Park along the St. Louis River during their migration north to the Lake of the Woods Area; birders said more pelicans will appear next week.  WDIO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MnDOT will begin construction on Highway 61/London Road on April 27 with work on a roundabout at 26th Avenue East and utility relocation at 40th Avenue East that will change traffic patterns until mid-June; weekly virtual updates begin May 6.  WDIO

HEALTH NEWS

  • Douglas County Drug Prevention Coalition will host a free medication take-back day at Superior Public Library on Friday, April 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with law enforcement collecting unused prescriptions as safety resources such as naloxone and lockboxes are provided.  WDIO
  • Aspirus Lake View was named among the top 20 critical access hospitals for patient satisfaction for the second year, plus it ranks in the top 1.5 percent of over 1,350 CAHs nationwide, reflecting its strong commitment to patient-centered care.  BusinessNorth

  • Enger Park Golf Course opened for the season on Tuesday, drawing a full tee sheet of golfers due to warm sunshine and rising temperatures. Only the front nine (and driving range) are available as crews clear the remaining snow and debris before all 18 holes reopen.  WDIO
