A gun from the USS Ward that fired the military's first shot in World War II has been on display outside the state Capitol for nearly 70 years and may soon be moved to the Minnesota Military and Veterans Museum at Camp Ripley in Little Falls.
The Navy approved the move and the museum needs state approval to bring the artifact indoors later this spring or summer — a change meant to preserve the historic piece for future generations.
Driver and Vehicle Services said Minnesotans must get a REAL ID in about two weeks if they plan to fly or enter federal buildings and must provide proof of identity and a $46 fee.
Officials noted that those who do not travel can wait, but delays may occur after May 7—new rules set after 9/11 have tightened requirements—so act soon.
