COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ National Volunteer Week highlights volunteer efforts at Essentia Health and Aspirus St. Luke’s in Duluth today — UMD student Emily Hattling created 150 care kits while longtime volunteer Donna DeToffol brightens the gift shop to support patients and families. WDIO
- ➤ On Earth Day, nearly 100 volunteers helped Rice’s Point Business Group tidy the industrial waterfront while 25 joined Chum to remove trash & invasive species. The cleanups marked the sixth annual event aimed at building on progress in managing local waste. WDIO
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Zeitgeist Minnesota Film Festival kicked off Wednesday, April 22 with local, national, and international films shown through screenings, workshops, panels, and competitions; the event features 45 films including Bigfoot Woods, filmed in Ely, and runs through Sunday. WDIO
- ➤ Downtown Duluth has announced the Movies in the Park summer lineup with free outdoor film screenings every Friday night beginning July 10. Opening night — featuring the Air Force Thunderbirds before a showing of Apollo 13 — will kick off the series. WDIO
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Duluth Public Schools released a plan to close a $4.2M budget gap for the 2026-2027 year by cutting administrative costs (15.61% reduction) and making smaller cuts at schools; they are reallocating funds to protect classroom supports and reduce job losses. WDIO
- ➤ Lakeside Early Learning in Duluth will permanently close on June 4 as its liability insurance was not renewed, and the center will continue limited services only as staffing and ratios allow at its Pitt St location. WDIO
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Environmental advocates in Duluth are working to improve the St. Louis River through water treatment, sediment cleanup, and habitat projects (AOC efforts) that boost fish populations. Cleanup work is 80% complete and removal from the AOC list is expected in the early 2030s. WDIO
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The Minnesota Lynx have partnered with Victory+ to stream all locally distributed regular-season and preseason games free for fans. Games will be available on smart TVs and mobile devices. KSTP
