BUSINESS NEWS

  • Duluth’s Canal Park Brewing Company won a silver medal at the 2026 World Beer Cup on April 22 in Philadelphia for its Night Trekker Baltic Porter, noted for hints of coffee, dark fruits and caramel. The beer previously won a gold medal at the Minnesota Brewers Cup in 2025.  Perfect Duluth Day
  • A preview of LNPK Grocery took place in Lincoln Park on Thursday when residents toured the new space at 2014 W Superior St. and offered feedback before a planned summer grand opening. Nonprofit Ecolibrium3 will supply fresh produce from its urban farm.  WDIO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On April 22, tugboat Meredith Ashton and a 240-ft deck barge brought project cargo to the rebuilt Berth 10 at the Clure Terminal Expansion pier—the first vessel in decades—and the $10.5 million project completed in March 2025 upgraded the port’s cargo handling as part of a major multimodal hub.  BusinessNorth

EDUCATION NEWS

  • High school students from the region competed in a welding event at Lake Superior College on Thursday—where they learned new techniques and previewed the college’s one-year welding certificate program; organizers said the contest gave practical experience for future industry work.  WDIO
  • Lakeside Early Learning in Duluth will close on June 4 due to rising costs (including a burst pipe that caused over $25,000 in damage) and lost liability insurance, leaving 60 families without childcare and staff without jobs.  WDIO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Port received $27 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation to revitalize its pier, with an $8.4 million match for upgrades including 1,150 linear feet of dock wall and 7.5 acres of laydown space.  WDIO
  • MnDOT is closing the right lane of the southbound I-35 onramp from Hwy 194/Mesaba Ave for pavement repairs while leaving the left lane open to keep traffic moving, and no timeline has been provided.  WDIO
  • Seven DFL candidates met with students and community members at UMD on Thursday evening to discuss their plans for Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District seat ahead of the 2026 election+ They addressed local issues such as health care, affordable housing and inflation to engage voters.  WDIO

  • Nurse practitioner Christie Erickson has been named Essentia Health’s associate chief medical officer for the East Market, marking a first for advanced practice providers — her 15 years of leadership and role in virtual care set a new course as local health care faces staffing challenges.  BusinessNorth
