Good morning, Duluth. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 2nd of May.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Cinco de Mayo on May 5th will let families celebrate by decorating their homes, playing festive music, and preparing traditional dishes while learning about the holiday’s history. Inspired by Chef Pati Jinich, Duluth residents will enjoy crafts and recipes — keeping the celebration fun and family-friendly — as they share in the lively traditions.  BusinessNorth

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Duluth 1200 Fund has received $1.4 million for its Historic Fund loan program and set aside $400,000 in 2025 for projects that restore historic building facades and boost downtown appeal. The program will accept applications from May 5 to Aug. 4 — applicants will be notified by mid-September — as part of its effort to revitalize the community.  BusinessNorth

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The College of St. Scholastica announced that federal funding for its Occupational Therapists as Mental Health Providers Project will end on December 31, a decision that may affect about 5,000 local students in need of mental health support. Officials said they have filed an appeal and are working with legal experts and local education leaders to contest the decision and protect the program.  BusinessNorth

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The NFIB filed an amicus brief in the case Minnesota Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc.—v. Nicole Blissenbach—at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit to challenge a state law that classifies independent contractors. The brief argues that the law, passed as part of a bundled omnibus bill with little debate, could force small business owners to incur high compliance costs and face steep penalties.  BusinessNorth
