COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Letter carriers will collect non-perishable food placed beside mailboxes this Mother's Day weekend to help families facing hunger in Duluth — community groups including Chum, Head of the Lakes United Way and Union Gospel Mission back the drive as one in five households struggle with food insecurity. Donors should drop off items by 9 a.m. on Saturday so postal workers can ensure they reach local food banks.  WDIO

  • John Chalstrom’s Bait and Archery (just north of Duluth) has prepared for Saturday's annual walleye and northern pike fishing opener by receiving 320 pounds of leeches to meet the expected boost in business since his family took over in 1981 (the event is set for May 10).  BusinessNorth

  • The annual Duluth Dylan Fest will run from May 18 to May 25—kicking off in Hibbing where fans will gather at Bob Dylan’s childhood home and tour Hibbing High School on May 18. On May 24, his birthday will be celebrated with a front porch party held at his Duluth childhood home.  WDIO

  • Rosie Loeffler-Kemp announced Wednesday that she is seeking re-election to represent District 1 on the Duluth School Board—she has served in several leadership roles and received multiple awards for her work. She said her long-term community involvement will help her continue providing a high-quality education, and the general election is set for November 4.  WDIO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Sen. Grant Hauschild said the Senate Tax Omnibus Bill now has new funds for local governments, fire and EMS services, schools, and conservation projects in Northern Minnesota. He said the moves will help rural areas and he will work to keep these wins in the bill as talks continue — ensuring help reaches the region.  BusinessNorth
  • The Senate Committee on Taxes released its omnibus tax bill Tuesday night and proposed a 3.1% cut to Duluth’s local government aid, removing $1.1 million from the city’s general fund. Mayor Roger J. Reinert — who said the city relies too much on unpredictable state aid — canceled his schedule and is traveling to the State Capitol today to address the cuts.  BusinessNorth
