- ➤ Safe Bay now offers a monitored overnight parking space at the back lot of Vineyard Church for drivers sleeping in their cars, with rules that include quiet hours and a prohibition on drugs and alcohol. The program runs through the end of October and will connect those in need with support services (neighbors have expressed concerns about uneven code enforcement). WDIO
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The Western Duluth Little League concession stand was damaged by arson that broke in and set it on fire while being stocked up, and a GoFundMe has been launched to help rebuild the stand before a major tournament in June — mobile concessions are in use until repairs are complete. WDIO
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Northland residents evacuated from areas near the Brimson Complex fire where nearly 15,000 acres are burning and local authorities closed Hwy 44 (between Rollins Road and Townline Road) with Hugo’s Bar designated as the evacuation rendezvous point. Fire crews from several agencies will continue battling the blaze under dry, windy conditions while Camp House Fire zones, which burned 4,000 acres on May 14, remain under evacuation orders. WDIO
- ➤ A mallard duck hatched several ducklings in an eagle's nest early Thursday, as captured on MN DNR's DuckCam (the nest is usually home to eagles). The mother was briefly chased away by a bald eagle but returned shortly, and the hatchlings are expected to reach water within 24 hours. KSTP
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday, three licensed practical nurses at North Shore Estates nursing home — located in Spirit Valley — began a 24-hour strike to demand inclusion in the same union contract as their co-workers; the strike ended May 14 at 7:00 a.m. Monarch Healthcare Management said negotiations were repeatedly canceled and cited proposed state cuts to long-term care funding as a key concern.
