  • On Sunday, community members in Brimson surprised Mikala Schliep by gifting her a new chicken coop and chickens after she lost her coop and most of her flock in the Camp House Fire—restoring hope—while firefighters saved one chicken during the blaze.  WDIO
  • Duluth East High School football team held its first community cleanup on May 18 when nearly 60 local volunteers picked up trash, removed old appliances, and stacked firewood for neighbors in Lakeside. The team will begin summer practices in late June.  WDIO

CRIME NEWS

  • Two men suspected of ATM jackpotting were charged in Superior and faced a $10,000 cash bond each — police said over $200,000 was stolen from Duluth ATMs and their next court date is set for today.  Superior Telegram

  • Duluth Dylan Fest returns with a week of Bob Dylan themed events across the Twin Ports — the festival will offer activities that honor the legendary musician while engaging local fans. Events are scheduled throughout the week to celebrate his enduring impact on music.  WDIO

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, May 12, Eastern Area Incident Management reported that crews made progress on the Brimson Complex fires as the Jenkins Creek Fire reached 6% containment and the Camp House Fire reached 40% containment—burning a combined 28,609 acres. Firefighters used hotshot crews, dozers, helicopters, and drones to protect nearby communities and secure key areas.  WDIO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Sen. Grant Hauschild said the Minnesota Senate approved a pension reform bill that will improve retirement benefits for teachers, firefighters, paramedics, State Patrol officers and public employees in a bipartisan vote of 55 to 12. The bill, which includes a 60/30 rule that lets teachers retire at 60 after 30 years of service (a key reform measure), now awaits action in the Minnesota House.  BusinessNorth
