EDUCATION NEWS

  • Duluth East student Shimia Nord graduated from high school while battling Stage 4 Renal Cell Carcinoma and celebrated with her peers on Wednesday evening. She said she felt grateful to be alive and plans to study criminology at St. Cloud State this fall—she is waiting for another round of scans at the end of the month.  WDIO
  • Over 400 firefighters attended the annual Minnesota Wildfire Academy in Grand Rapids at Minnesota North College to hone their skills with both classroom instruction and hands-on training. Organizers said around 450 students from local, state, and federal agencies participated+ building connections that will aid effective coordination during wildfire emergencies.  WDIO
  • Denfeld High School senior Reagan Kern will travel to New York City to compete in the Broadway League’s Jimmy Awards on Monday June 23rd — he is the first student from northern Minnesota chosen to represent the state in this national theater competition.  WDIO

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Jenkin’s Creek Fire remains at 16,091 acres and 94% contained while the Horse River Fire stays at 13 acres and 0% contained. A BAER team is now assisting with watershed impact assessments — the weather forecast calls for 3-4 days of moderate fire weather with a chance of rain on Sunday to help crews make gains.  WDIO

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hundreds of nurses at Aspirus St. Luke's and Essentia Health joined picket lines in Duluth as their contracts are set to expire on June 30 and raised concerns over low staffing for patient care. Hospital officials said they would use flexible staffing models to maintain safe care—while negotiations continue.  WDIO
