Good morning, Duluth. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 12th of June.

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Laid-off miners face an uncertain future after Cleveland-Cliffs’ Minorca Mine was idled and Hibbing Taconite was partially idled, leaving about 300 workers unsure of their next steps. The Minnesota legislature approved a 26-week unemployment benefits extension—adding to the base 26 weeks—to give miners a year's support while some have already transferred within the company.  BusinessNorth

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On June 10, state and local officials celebrated the completion of the $9 million Perch Lake Habitat Restoration Project which dredged the lake, installed a culvert to reconnect it to the river, and built a pedestrian bridge — work that has already led to returning fish and birds and invites residents to enjoy swimming, canoeing, and kayaking. The project brought together the Minnesota DNR, MnDOT, the City of Duluth, and the Minnesota Land Trust to improve local recreation and wildlife habitat.  WDIO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Congress removed a provision from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act on June 10 that would have issued a lease to Antofagasta for sulfide ore mining near the Boundary Waters—Senator Tina Smith and environmental groups hailed the move as a victory, though a formal vote is still needed to strike the language.  WDIO
  • The Minnesota Legislature allocated $10 million to replace the aging air traffic control tower at Duluth International Airport with funds split evenly between 2026 and 2027 — this step is part of a larger $72 million project, and more funding applications will be submitted to secure the remaining amount.  BusinessNorth
  • St. Louis County leaders said the bonding bill does not include any local projects but supports state programs for Local Road Improvement, Bridge Replacement, and Wetland Replacement Programs. They will work with legislators on priority projects (such as a new solid waste management campus in Canyon) while monitoring further impacts from state and federal actions.  WDIO
  • Minnesota lawmakers passed a $700 million bonding bill that funds key infrastructure projects and a grant program for public, private, and charter schools (to install special law enforcement key boxes on their buildings) to boost safety. Rep. Jeff Witte, a former police officer (who noted that seconds count in emergencies), said the measure will help law enforcement respond faster during a crisis.  KSTP
