ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A vehicle crashed and flipped onto its side (near North 4th Avenue West and West 3rd Street) just before 5:00 p.m., and the driver was cited for failing to yield while three people received non-life-threatening injuries with no signs of impairment found.  WDIO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Xcel Energy advises residents to check its website by clicking on the residential customers section and then heating and cooling solutions to view the rebate summary sheet for new air conditioners. The rebates range from hundreds to thousands of dollars — and the site helps connect users with installers and home energy ratings to reduce summer costs.  KSTP

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Incident Management Organization reported yesterday that the Jenkins Creek Fire is 94% contained but green pockets of fuel still pose a burn risk. Crews reduced fuels along key roads with masticators and will continue suppression efforts as rain is expected Friday morning — smoke from Canadian wildfires still affects air quality.  WDIO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Duluth Police Department welcomed their new police dog, K9 Fitz— a 1.5-year-old mix from Hungary— who finished K9 School on May 22 and started work on May 26. Officer Shane McKee, who has six years of service, said he will keep training Fitz to help with drug detection and tracking.  WDIO

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Minnesota Nurses Association will hold a strike vote on June 23 that would let nurse negotiators call a strike with a 10-day notice if approved — contracts for acute care nurses in the Twin Ports are set to expire on June 30. Bargaining sessions are scheduled with Essentia Health on June 12 and 25 and with Aspirus St. Luke’s on June 18 as talks continue over staffing and wages.  WDIO

  • The American Voyager Association held its 35th rally in Duluth where riders practiced low-speed maneuvers in a parking lot before riding to Split Rock Lighthouse—Vice Chairman Ken Knight said the drills build confidence and help riders master safe turning techniques on their large touring bikes.  WDIO
