CRIME NEWS

  • St. Louis County Jail staff and first responders tried to save an inmate who was unresponsive in their cell Tuesday morning around 9:35 a.m.—the inmate was declared dead and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the cause.  KSTP

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Scientists discovered a new microbial species on UMD's R/V Blue Heron during repairs last fall—crew members found a tar-like substance seeping from the rudder shaft that DNA tests confirmed as a previously unknown life form.  WDIO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State employees represented by MAPE held a rally Monday morning outside the MnDOT Central Office on Mesaba Avenue in Duluth to protest proposed SEGIP healthcare changes that could raise out-of-pocket costs by $2,500 to $4,500 per year by January 2027 — union leader Ariel Johnson warned rising costs might force workers to leave state jobs.  WDIO
  • Essentia Health has hired Samuel Moose as director of tribal government relations to serve as the main link between the health system and tribal governments in Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. He brings over 25 years of experience in tribal health care — expertise he will use to build partnerships with 11 federally recognized tribes in Minnesota.  BusinessNorth

HEALTH NEWS

  • On June 23, Tundra the brown bear at Lake Superior Zoo received a full-metal crown made from talladium—this innovative treatment followed a prior root canal and should help him return to his exhibit with his brother Banks soon. The success of the procedure may lead to similar treatments for bears in other facilities.  WDIO
  • Duluth nurses, healthcare workers and Advanced Practice Providers at Essentia Health and Aspirus-St. Luke’s voted to authorize a potential strike as contract talks stall over concerns about staffing, patient safety and scheduling. Hospital officials said they will return to negotiations today to address these issues before any strike is called.  WDIO
  • The Minnesota Nurses Association held a vote to authorize a possible strike on June 23 as it continues contract talks with Aspirus St. Luke’s and Essentia Health amid staffing concerns—results will be announced on June 24 and bargaining resumes today. Union leaders may call a strike after a 10-day notice if new contracts do not address alleged unfair labor practices.  WDIO
