  • Downtown Duluth Days, the rebranded Sidewalk Days Festival, will run Wednesday and Thursday with over 130 vendors + downtown restaurants and retailers participating along with a block party and returning favorites like a 5K, car show, and live music. The festival will feature indie folk and country rock bands, food trucks, and outdoor beer tents with events starting at 7 p.m.  BusinessNorth

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Scientists at the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Large Lakes Observatory found a new microorganism called ShipGoo001 last fall—when the crew heard a strange noise from the propeller and saw tar-like goo leaking from the rudder shaft—and the team will study its methane production to see if it can help with biofuel production; they will also invite public input to name the species on July 30.  BusinessNorth

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • St. Louis County officials are preparing to follow new rules from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act—signed on July 4—that will add work requirements for Medicaid and change SNAP funding. The plan may cost about $6.4 million for Medicaid and add $1.5 million for SNAP while the county awaits more details from the state.  WDIO
  • On July 7th, six U.S. Representatives from Minnesota and Wisconsin sent a letter to Canadian Ambassador Kristen Hillman asking for stronger forest management practices to help stop worsening wildfires that have lowered air quality in our area— they urged Natural Resources Canada and the Canadian forest service to take action.  WDIO

  • Range Mental Health Center added Kenzie Hoffmann to its Outpatient Therapy team as a therapist intern; she holds a bachelor of science degree and returned in May to start serving clients ages 6 and older with in-person and telehealth appointments (in Virginia) after previously working in Adult Rehabilitative Mental Health Services (2022 to 2023).  BusinessNorth
