Good morning, Duluth. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 9th of July.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Three local actors—Alyson Enderle, Gabbi Mack, and Lussi Pearl—described 'Waitress' as a special show that mixes real-life challenges with musical humor during recent rehearsals. Duluth Playhouse will perform the musical at NorShor Theatre from July 11 to 27.  Superior Telegram

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fireworks that explode or leave the ground have been illegal in Minnesota, and police reported injuries and property damage after the Fourth of July weekend — state officials say enforcement is hard because the fireworks vanish quickly. Fire Marshal Dan Krier explained that increasing public education on firework safety could help reduce injuries and damage.  KSTP

HEALTH NEWS

  • Starting Sept. 1, UCare will temporarily cut Medicaid coverage for 88,000 people in 11 counties (seniors and people with disabilities will remain covered) as it faces mounting losses and insufficient government funds, and the change will last until the end of 2025.  KSTP
  • Members of the Minnesota Nurses Association began a strike and picket line Tuesday at Essentia Health to protest its refusal to bargain with Advanced Practice Providers — a move it claims violates unfair labor practices. The strike started with 293 clinic nurses and healthcare workers from six facilities and will add 430 APPs on July 10 — while Essentia said the action will not alter its ongoing legal review and expects negotiations to take 18 months.  BusinessNorth
