Good morning, Duluth. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 30th of July.

FINANCE NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maxfield Research and Consulting completed a Housing Needs Analysis that shows Duluth’s population may exceed 90,000 by 2030—adding pressure to a market with only a 1.8% vacancy rate and 53% of renters paying over 30% of their income. City leaders will review the study's recommendations—including a push for more senior housing—and plan a housing strategies conference in November.  WDIO
  • Duluth City Council approved a pay raise for councilors that increases their monthly pay from $1150 to $1425 and will take effect in 2027. They also passed a right-to-repair ordinance set for the November ballot, authorized staff to start negotiations with Eden Renewables from New York for a potential solar farm near Hawk Ridge, and postponed a vote on forming a Transportation Commission until August.  WDIO
  • The Minnesota Department of Transportation reported that crews were about halfway through installing deck overlays and the bridge barrier after the final deck pour on July 17, and a new traffic closure on I-35 near the ore docks will force drivers to use one lane in each direction this week—expected to remain until October. The project will improve road safety by replacing aging infrastructure—with painting and lighting scheduled as final steps.  WDIO
