Wildfire smoke from Canada has not stopped Spirit Valley Days or the Head of the Lakes Fair from going as planned in the Twin Ports.

Organizers said that despite poor air quality, preparations remain strong—Spirit Valley Days began indoors on July 30 and the fair continues with outdoor activities scheduled.

Lake Superior Helicopters will host a free open house at Sky Harbor Airport on Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m. The event will let visitors see helicopters up close and include tours with alumni who explain training and career opportunities — a chance to learn about the various roles these aircraft play in medical and firefighting efforts.

A city study by Maxfield Consultants shows Duluth needs nearly 6,200 new housing units to keep up with growth.

Mayor Roger Reinert said both affordable and market-rate homes and ideas like converting empty office space are needed to ease the shortage — local developers are planning new projects.
