  • Residents in Duluth gathered for National Night Out, a community event held on the first Tuesday of every August that allowed local police and fire teams to meet neighbors in a relaxed, non-emergency setting. Hosted by Piedmont Dental with more than 500 attendees, the event offered food, music, and activities—strengthening connections among residents and first responders.  WDIO

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A motorcyclist from Mountain Iron was injured with *non-life threatening* injuries after striking a deer while riding north on Highway 53 near Shipley Road in New Independence Township just before 8:30 p.m. on August 5, with the Minnesota State Patrol, St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, Alborn Fire, and Mayo Ambulance assisting at the scene.  WDIO

CRIME NEWS

  • At 18 N. Second Ave. W. in downtown Duluth, city crews demolished the old Shoppers Ramp as part of a $900,000 neighborhood rehabilitation project and on Wednesday morning a group of vagrant persons blocked the Palmer House parking garage entrance while arguing and smoking meth+ raising concerns in this high-crime area.  BusinessNorth

  • The Duluth Playhouse is ending its season with two youth musicals at the NorShor Theatre. Cats: Young Actors Edition runs August 8—10 and Rock of Ages: Teen Edition runs August 15—17—featuring 65 young performers and guidance from Associate Artistic Director Charlie Sutton.  WDIO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Haley Hedstrom was named the new executive director of Visit Duluth and will start on Aug. 25. She led Lake Superior Zoo to a 30% rise in visitors since 2020 and will attend an industry luncheon on Aug. 13—she plans to boost Duluth tourism.  BusinessNorth
  • City officials said the municipal primary election on Tuesday will use a new polling site for precincts 24 and 25 in Piedmont Heights—construction at St. Lawrence Catholic Church forced precinct 25 to share precinct 24’s voting location—and both precincts will vote at Christ Lutheran Church at 2415 Ensign Street while early voting continues at City Hall through Monday.  WDIO
  • The Minnesota Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that ghost guns do not need serial numbers because the law defers to federal rules—Minnesota has yet to regulate them. The decision came after a 2022 Fridley case in which a trooper found a ghost gun without a serial number, prompting concerns from law enforcement and the Attorney General.  KSTP

SPORTS NEWS

  • After nearly 50 hours at sea, the crew of the Catapult (recording an unofficial time of 49 hours, 21 minutes) finished the Trans Superior Yacht Race on August 4 when they anchored in Duluth Harbor after racing from the Upper Peninsula. Forty-five boats competed in grouped classes and an all-female team—one of only three in race history—is raising funds for The Trevor Project with their run dubbed the 'Trans Trans Superior Race.'  WDIO
