Good morning, Duluth. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 8th of August.
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The oceangoing vessel Asian Spirit arrived Aug.7 at the Clure Public Marine Terminal with 39 wind turbine blades, completing a project of six voyages and over 100,000 freight tons of wind energy cargo—its shipment is heading to North Dakota to repower turbines and mark the port’s 20th anniversary of wind energy deliveries. - ➤ ALLETE reported Q2 earnings of 55 cents per share and $31.9 million in net income, down from last year’s 57 cents per share and $33.0 million due mainly to lower industrial margins from reduced taconite sales at Minnesota Power—mining slowdown has negatively impacted its Regulated Operations. The company also noted merger-related expenses and expects pending approvals to allow its planned transaction to close later in 2025. BusinessNorth
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Teamsters Local 320, representing 1,400 University of Minnesota service workers, filed an intent to strike due to unresolved contract issues and plans for a walk-off on August 20 after a 10-day cool-off period. The union said UMN’s offer of a modest wage increase and a 10% hike in healthcare costs will not meet their needs (rising inflation makes current pay insufficient). KSTP
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison and 50 other attorneys are sending 37 letters to voice providers demanding they stop illegal robocalls routed through their networks (Operation Robocall Roundup) to enforce FCC rules. KSTP
