- ➤ On a hot July morning, Duluth street outreach worker Nathan Kesti walked downtown to check on people on the streets and offer help like granola bars, first aid kits, and cigarettes to keep them calm and safe. He has conducted nearly 29,000 visits in three years and helped over 150 individuals access treatment and housing (Downtown officials and business leaders support his work). BusinessNorth
- ➤ Nine local restaurants and eight local breweries will compete this Sunday at Skyline Social and Games for the 4th Annual Bloody Mary Bash to raise funds for Never Surrender — a charity supporting those affected by ALS. President Corey Kolquist said the event aims to exceed $25,000 from ticket sales, raffles and bar sales. WDIO

- ➤ Minnesota Power and ALLETE Inc. said support was growing for their planned acquisition as six groups sent letters to the Public Utilities Commission—groups that include business, labor and community organizations—and they planned to use the deal to boost clean energy while keeping bills low. - ➤ On August 7, the vessel Asian Spirit arrived at Duluth Seaway Port Authority’s Clure Public Marine Terminal carrying 39 wind turbine blades that completed six voyages and moved more than 100,000 freight tons of wind energy cargo. In the second quarter, ALLETE reported earnings of 55 cents per share and a net income of $31.9 million—figures that included $3.4 million in transaction expenses. BusinessNorth

- ➤ U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Congressman Pete Stauber visited Duluth International Airport on Saturday to tour the third oldest air traffic control tower, built in 1952. They said the tower is old and might get upgrades with funds from the $12.5 billion air traffic package—part of plans to improve technology—which is expected to cost about $72 million. WDIO

- ➤ Memorial Blood Centers (MBC) said today Minnesota’s blood supply is dangerously low because summer donations declined and trauma cases increased. Hospitals need a seven-day supply so donations of O-negative and O-positive blood are urgently needed. WDIO
- ➤ Julie Moravchik, a longtime Northland journalist and the first woman to lead a Duluth news station, was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer and faced financial strain. On Saturday, a Boots and Bling benefit at the Northern Pines Golf and Event Center in Iron River raised over $12,000 to help with her treatment while she urged women to keep their appointments. WDIO
