- ➤ The annual Proctor Hoghead Festival celebrates 50 years of honoring the city's railroad legacy with events that bring the community together. - ➤ Local artists discovered CPL Imaging closed on July 23, raising worries over its unique art reproduction service when the door was unexpectedly locked. Indigenous First LLC said the shop temporarily closed due to staffing issues and will reopen soon with limited services—artists hope it remains irreplaceable. BusinessNorth
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On August 11, Duluth City Council approved a consent agenda that included a zoning change to expand daycare services in several neighborhoods—Council Vice President Lynn Marie Nephew said it will help local childcare providers. They also voted Deb Deluca in as a temporary replacement for former District 2 Councilor Mike Mayou, increased funding for the Skyline Parkway Improvement Project, and approved an agreement for a new development project while tableting the ordinance for a transportation commission. - ➤ Duluth City Council will vote tonight on Deb DeLuca—selected on Tuesday—to fill District 2 after Mike Mayou moved outside the district; the temporary appointment will last until the November election. WDIO
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Fairview Range Medical Center is now a Level IV trauma hospital after it passed an outside review of its resources for trauma care—staff completed a voluntary process to join Minnesota’s trauma system and will now work on continuous performance improvement to keep care strong. WDIO
- ➤ Families preparing for the new school year in Duluth can sign up for Medicaid or CHIP to get free or low cost health care, which covers checkups, emergencies, and dental care—this coverage is available for children up to 19 and is renewable annually if income guidelines are met.
