ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters responded to a house fire at the 7100 block of Seville Road in Industrial Township on Monday morning (Aug 17th) and worked with agencies (including Cloquet Fire District, Grand Lake Fire and Rescue, St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, and Industrial Fire Department) to contain the incident with no injuries reported.  WDIO

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Port of Duluth-Superior earned its 18th Pacesetter Award after a 17.4% jump in international cargo tonnage during the 2024 shipping season. Kevin Beardsley, the executive director, said the win, driven by more grain, petcoke, and breakbulk exports, is the port’s first award since 2019—showing strong progress.  BusinessNorth

CRIME NEWS

  • Duluth man Nathan Davin, 46, was charged with the alleged murder of his 74-year-old mother, Maedean Davin, after officers found her body with a gunshot wound on August 16 at a Ninth Avenue East home at 10:50 p.m.—he now faces a charge of 2nd Degree Murder, Not Premediated.  WDIO

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Lake Superior Marine Museum Association announced on August 19 that it acquired the historic South Pier Outer Breakwater Lightstation—an enduring landmark at the entrance of the Duluth ship canal since 1901. The group will complete planning and security upgrades later this year, with renovations set for 2026 and tours expected to begin in 2027.  WDIO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Starting in January, Minnesota’s minimum wage will rise to $11.41 an hour from $11.13 to adjust for inflation—while the 90-day training wage for workers under 20 increases to $9.31, and cities like St. Paul and Minneapolis already require higher wages for some employers. This change comes as part of statewide efforts to keep wages in line with inflation.  KSTP

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Minnesota presented its last, best and final offer to the union representing 1,400 service workers on August 19. The union recommended a no vote and will hold a vote soon as the offer expires on September 5 — the university said it has a strike plan to lessen any disruptions.  WDIO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Duluth has issued a boil water notice for residents in upper Lakeside after water pressure dropped during reservoir tank maintenance on Tuesday—covering the area between 43rd Ave E and 54th Ave E. Officials expect tests on Friday to confirm water safety and advise residents to boil water for drinking and cooking until further notice.  WDIO
  • Thanks to a community partnership with Cenovus Energy—upgrading a Jet Ski and boat technology—Superior first responders improved their ability to quickly reach water emergencies on Lake Superior, and the equipment upgrades, including sonar and underwater cameras for the sheriff’s office, will offer safer rescues. The new gear has been installed to enhance response times and better protect both emergency teams and community members.  WDIO
