  • On August 19, Northland SBDC celebrated raising $150 million in capital and launching over 200 new businesses during an event at Blackwoods Event Center in Proctor. The celebration brought together local funders & elected officials and highlighted the center's growing role in northern Minnesota's small business support along with plans to expand innovation in AI and cybersecurity.  BusinessNorth

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new survey from Affinity Plus shows nearly half of Minnesotans aged 18 to 24 struggle to pay for tuition, rent and food while many say these money issues hurt their school work. Duluth Lake Superior College will soon offer free financial coaching—helping students learn budgeting and credit tips to manage everyday costs.  BusinessNorth
  • Hundreds of new Bulldogs are moving into UMD dorms & apartments today as volunteers and upperclassmen help students settle in before classes start Monday, August 25. UMD officials said union strike negotiations were paused after a last and best offer was submitted, keeping move-in operations on schedule.  WDIO

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Anna O’Neil, a Duluth teacher, rode nearly 7,500 miles this summer on her 2016 Triumph Tiger from Duluth to the Arctic Ocean and back. She covered over 1,000 miles on dirt roads—mostly along the Dempster Highway—and now plans to share her trip highlights online as Anna Odyssey.  WDIO

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cyclists rode in the 4th annual Bell Bank Ride on August 20 along a trail system maintained by Cyclists of Gitchee Gumee Shores—over 70 riders chose 10, 25 or 45 mile routes ending at Lester chalet and raised funds to help lower registration fees for Duluth DEVO’s youth mountain bike program.  WDIO
