- ➤ For 16 years, the Duluth police and fire departments played a charity softball game Thursday night to raise funds for the Northern Lights Foundation — which gives cash grants to families with a child facing a life-threatening illness. WDIO
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Mavious Redmond, a 54-year-old from Austin, was sentenced to one year and a day in federal prison — she posed as her dead mother for 25 years to claim Social Security benefits totaling over $360,000 and will be on supervised release after her term. KSTP
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A 3-part workforce solutions series for employers will be held at Mountain Iron Community Center on September 18, October 9 and November 13 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with lunch included—sessions will cover workforce development, cross-sector collaboration and adapting to future work. - ➤ The Duluth Fire Department held a pinning ceremony on August 21st to honor firefighters who completed probation, special training, or received promotions. Fire Chief Shawn Krizaj said the event recognized their hard work in responding to fires, medical calls, and safety inspections. WDIO
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Essentia Health reached a tentative agreement with the Minnesota Nurses Association—covering the first contracts for nurses at its Duluth clinics on 1st, 2nd and 3rd Streets as well as St. Mary’s Superior Clinic. The union will hold a ratification vote on August 28 and the contracts will run through March 21. WDIO
- ➤ Essentia Health added four new board members—Marc Adams, Marci Knight, Dr. Josh Honeyman and Sister Jeanne Ann Weber—to bring leadership from business, marketing, medicine and religious communities to guide the system through evolving challenges.
