📰 Economy
The Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce has endorsed Google's proposed data center in Hermantown, a project expected to support about 1,100 jobs per year and add $136M annually to the regional GDP from 2026 to 2029.
The plan includes approximately $130M for public infrastructure improvements (roads, water, sewer upgrades) to benefit local communities.
🎓 Education
A temporary two-year exemption now permits many Minnesota school districts to start class as early as Sept.
1, and 44 districts have returned before Labor Day. Some larger districts continue with post-Labor Day openings while education advocates and local tourism leaders weigh schedule shifts + potential impacts on summer employment.
The newly consolidated Carlton-Wrenshall School District held an open house at Otter Creek Elementary and Silver Creek Secondary schools, where families and students toured facilities and set up new bus routes ahead of classes starting Tuesday, Sept.
8. The district now uses the new (Raptors) identity.
🏛️ Government
Congress passed a bipartisan bill delaying the federal hemp ban until Dec.
11, 2026, giving Minnesota hemp producers, retailers and brewers time to adjust while lawmakers work on a permanent fix; the law bans hemp derived THC products that could impact a $33+ billion industry.
