COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chum’s Shelter and Drop-in Center will move to the renovated Damiano Center through today as part of a planned expansion funded by St. Louis County, the City of Duluth and local partners—this move gives the shelter more than 15,000 square feet to serve homeless guests with meals, clothing and beds.  BusinessNorth
  • Duluth attorney Charles ‘Huck’ Andresen, 84, died Sept 8 at his home surrounded by his family—he was known for his long career in law and community service across Duluth. A service will be held Oct 11 at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Duluth at 11:00 a.m.  BusinessNorth
  • In May, the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation changed its name to Boreal Waters Community Foundation — reflecting its service to 12 counties and connection to the local boreal ecosystem — and launched an Impact Investing program to fund local projects. The foundation, with $117 million in assets and over $2.5 million in grants and scholarships distributed, is now investing in housing initiatives in Duluth and Grand Marais to support Main Street growth.  BusinessNorth

  • Legacy Cannabis opened its off-reservation shop at 4:20 p.m. on Tuesday in Duluth—making it the first non-tribal recreational dispensary in Minnesota after licensing delays since 2023. Other retailers in the Twin Cities and surrounding areas also began adult-use sales on Tuesday.  KSTP

  • The Duluth Preservation Alliance is hosting the West Side Story tour on Sunday, Sept. 21 (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) to showcase four private homes and two public buildings that tell the story of early working-class neighborhoods.   • Duluth drivers facing high gas prices can use GasBuddy to compare local fuel deals and shop at off-highway stations or warehouse clubs for savings. Experts advise keeping your fuel tank at least half full, checking tire pressure regularly, and removing roof racks when idle—steps that improve fuel economy during cold weather and potential shortages.  KSTP

  • The Minnesota Department of Revenue warns Minnesotans about text messages that claim to be from the department and include a suspicious hyperlink intended to update banking information — recipients should delete the message, report it as junk, and contact their bank if they clicked the link.  BusinessNorth
  • The Minnesota Department of Revenue warned residents that scam texts ask for banking details to claim a refund and falsely state that failing to provide the information by today will forfeit the refund—citizens are urged to report suspicious messages and contact their bank if any details were shared.  KSTP

HEALTH NEWS

  • Riverwood Healthcare Center added Physician Assistant Dayelise (Daya) Fleigle to its orthopaedic care team in Aitkin and Nurse Practitioner Matthew Jerulle to its cardiology team, where they will work with skilled doctors at the specialty clinic.     Join us for a FREE women's lifting event hosted at Northland Fitness in Lincoln Park. Suggested donation of $20 to Duluth Center For Women and Children (more info on this cause and how to donate in the sign up link!). This event is perfect for novice AND experienced lifters who want to have some fun lifting while raising money for a local cause! We are planning to back squat together for his pop-up. If you are a novice lifter there will be a physical therapist and personal trainer present to help you know exactly what to do! This is also an awesome opportunity to tour Northland Fitness and try out a new gym for free!
