ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two pets died and a family was displaced by a fire on the 500 block of East Eighth Street Sunday, September 28—damages were estimated at $116K and the Duluth Fire Department is investigating the blaze.  WDIO

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Starting Oct. 1, FOX 21 Local news, weather and sports updates will air on Townsquare Media's MIX108, B105, KOOL 101.7, 92.1 Sasquatch and The Northland FAN 106.5FM and 560AM. The new partnership will extend FOX 21’s trusted local coverage — from International Falls to Grand Portage — and bring accurate updates to the Northland community.  BusinessNorth
  • ALLETE, the company that owns Minnesota Power, is waiting for a final decision at the Public Utilities Commission on October 3 at 9 a.m.—the vote is the last step before the company may be sold and marks the end of months of public meetings on rate impacts and clean energy plans. Supporters say the new commitments boost customer benefits while critics remain unconvinced by the changes.  WDIO

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Tuesday evening, the Depot United campaign began at the historic St. Louis County depot — supporting local arts and cultural organizations such as the Minnesota Ballet and Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra. The campaign runs through November 19 and every donation equally aids six groups.  WDIO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Over 500 Duluth fifth graders spent the day at the 41st Annual Forestry Field Day where they learned about tree identification, sustainability and safe hiking during visits to Lester Park, Chester Park and Spirit Mountain—led by natural resources volunteers. The event, sponsored by the Minnesota Chapter of the Society of American Foresters, offered hands-on outdoor learning outside the classroom.  WDIO
  • Minnesota students’ new science test scores dropped sharply, with only 26.2% meeting the standard compared to about 40% on the old tests—state education officials said teachers and students need time to adjust to the changes. The results, released on Wednesday, show that 5.4% scored higher than the standard while 46.1% scored at the beginning level.  KSTP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Minnesota Cold Weather Rule went into effect on Oct. 1 and will run until April 30—its goal is to prevent people from having their primary heat source disconnected. Customers who receive a notice should call their utility immediately to arrange a payment plan based on income.  KSTP
  • A new report from Majority in the Middle shows Minnesota lawmakers are increasing bipartisan work as the House’s bipartisan bills rose from 20% to 35% and the Senate’s from 31% to 39% between 2023 and 2025—192 of 201 lawmakers co-authored a bill with a member of the opposite party. Senator Hauschild said key issues like education and public safety are driving this collaboration.  WDIO

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Minnesota Department of Health confirmed 10 measles cases since Monday—each linked to travel and a lack of vaccination—raising the state's total to 18 for 2025. Health officials warn that measles spreads quickly and urge families to update immunizations.  KSTP
