COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At a gala held Tuesday night, over 400 people gathered to mark 20 years of service by the Northern Lights Foundation — which helps families with children facing life-threatening illnesses. Founder Ken Larson said the event raised over $1.5 million — funds given as grants to families within 100 miles of Duluth.  WDIO

  • Pulsar Helium Inc. began drilling a third well near Babbitt after a drill rig arrived on Oct. 15; company officials say the new phase will help define helium reserves and may lead to Minnesota’s first commercial helium operation — state guidelines are still pending.  BusinessNorth

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Crosby Fire is now 95% contained—a 300-acre blaze with firefighters still working as some smoke lingers. The closed section of the Superior Hiking Trail between Caribou Falls State Wayside Rest and County Road 7 will reopen today at 8 a.m.  KSTP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MnDOT is urging drivers to exercise caution on Highway 2—Bong Bridge as delayed pole deliveries and ongoing construction leave the Minnesota side dark for several months; new poles are expected by the end of December.  WDIO

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials say respiratory illnesses like flu, COVID-19, RSV and pneumococcal disease spread more easily indoors this fall—so getting vaccinated is key to preventing severe illness and hospital visits.
