COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Duluth honored over 70 nominees for the Duluth Peace Hero Award on November 3rd—recognizing local individuals like Pez Davila and three student winners for their community efforts. The ceremony awarded a $1,000 prize to the top honoree and $100 prizes to the students.  WDIO
  • Twin Ports YMCAs announced they are offering free memberships to furloughed federal employees for November to help families facing financial challenges. Furloughed workers can show an official furlough notice, a $0 pay stub, an email from their employer, or a valid federal ID—and current members impacted by the shutdown can get their fees waived at select branches.  WDIO
  • St. Louis County Veterans Service Office is asking community members to honor veterans by lighting green lights as part of Operation Green Light, which began November 4 and runs until Veterans Day—people from Duluth and Hibbing have already joined the effort.  WDIO
  • Faith United Methodist Church in Superior is helping hundreds of Douglas County families by providing food at its Food Distribution Center amid rising grocery challenges—Food Pantry Director Jessica Tapani said the center saw 120 extra families in the past two weeks and will serve 300—400 families tonight using donated food and funds.  WDIO

  • Mesabi Metallics Co. announced that its Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel Jessica Nelson has been named the 2025 Alumna Achievement Award recipient from the University of St. Thomas School of Law and is a finalist for Solo General Counsel of the Year. Nelson leads legal strategy on a multi-billion-dollar mining project — the first new mine and plant of its kind in Minnesota in nearly 50 years — while also mentoring young attorneys and volunteering in the community.  BusinessNorth

  • New Empower research shows that 68% of Americans expect a higher cost for Thanksgiving dinner, though 73% say the meal is still worth it—reflecting concerns about rising expenses in holiday traditions. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The St. Louis County Board discussed the role of NDAs in the Hermantown data center project during a recent meeting—commissioners voted six to one to make the economic development guidelines public while residents voiced concerns about transparency and local calm.   • The Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families has asked USDA for clear guidance on SNAP benefits as federal court rulings led to a temporary cut in distributions for over 440,000 Minnesotans, including 180,000 children and 67,000 seniors.
