Good morning, Duluth. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 14th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Spectrum donated $5,000 to the Duluth Honor Guard, which had been covering military funeral expenses out of pocket since losing critical funding in 2023 (to help pay for uniforms and equipment) and the gift will allow the group to outfit at least two new members (costing about $2,000 per uniform).  WDIO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Since 1985 the Duluth 1200 Fund has offered low-interest loans to local businesses with the aim of creating 1,200 jobs and it is marking its 40th anniversary. The fund has provided more than $12 million in loans to 93 companies and helped create 1,900 jobs — it now supports programs like a childcare grant, mentorship loan, and a historic preservation fund launching in 2025.  WDIO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Phase 5 of the taxiway project at Duluth Airport is completed after construction started in May and finished in October. The $12 million project added 32,000 square yards of new pavement, storm drainage, and more than five miles of electrical conduit for upgraded lighting and improved safety.  BusinessNorth
  • Federal lawmakers inserted a rule in a spending bill that may ban hemp products with over .4 mg THC—this change could force breweries like Bent Paddle Brewing to adjust and hurt a $26.5 billion market. Minnesota Sen. Murphy said small businesses would have one year to meet the new limit and risk losing over 300,000 jobs if the rule remains.  WDIO
  • Documents released under the Data Practices Act have revealed differences between what Hermantown officials shared in private and what they told the public about a proposed data center on 234 acres. City officials stress that the project is still tentative—local groups call for more transparency as permits are pending and an open house is planned.  WDIO
