BUSINESS NEWS

  • MFI executive director Rick Horton will retire Dec. 9 as he moves to southern Alabama to fish, bike and relax, and he plans to spend summers in Grand Rapids (Horton said the move comes after many years in the forest products business). Minnesota Forest Industries has named Tom Radovich as the new executive vice president; Radovich, who was operations manager at the Sappi mill in Cloquet (and previously served on the MFI Board), will split his time between the State Capitol and the Duluth office.  BusinessNorth

CULTURE NEWS

  • Glensheen Mansion has opened ticket sales for its annual Christmas season tours—visitors can take daily self-guided tours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or Evening Candlelight Tours on Fridays and Saturdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. starting November 28 through December 28—with bonus dates on December 14, 21 and 28.  WDIO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A report from the Minnesota Chamber Foundation released Nov 19 shows that Minnesota’s economy is growing slower than the nation’s with low job and income gains—leaders have started a multi-year plan to boost investments and build more jobs.  BusinessNorth

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lake Superior College held a Winter Weather Safety Fair to help nearly 400 students get ready for harsh Minnesota winters—emergency responders shared safety tips and handed out 500 winter survival kits with essentials like first-aid supplies and emergency blankets. The event taught students how to avoid car accidents and plan safe routes in areas with poor cell reception.  WDIO
  • Nearly 500 attendees gathered at the DECC for the 3rd annual Women in Leadership Conference, where international speaker Lamiaa Laurène Daif and local leaders discussed navigating change and mastering assertiveness — organizer Aubrey Hagen said next year's event will open registration in December and continue showcasing Duluth’s homegrown talent.  WDIO

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Minnesota Raptor Center has introduced a northern hawk owl as its first ambassador — a female born in captivity at six weeks old in August. She cannot survive in the wild — and staff now ask visitors to help choose her name.  KSTP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On November 17, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced $20 million to replace the aging air traffic control tower at Duluth International Airport—bringing total federal funds to $37 million. Officials said the $66 million project will start construction once an additional $10 million is secured.  WDIO

HEALTH NEWS

  • United Way of Northeastern Minnesota announced that the Smile United Crisis Dental Fund is closed to non-veterans due to low funds, leaving dental aid only for two veterans. They said that if enough donations are received on Give to the Max Day today, the fund will reopen immediately to help residents with dental bills.  WDIO
  • A 10-year-old boy who signed a one-day contract with the Minnesota Wild as part of his Make-A-Wish request died Tuesday night after battling cancer — his family said he had been fighting the illness since Christmas.  KSTP
