- ➤ Bell ringers gathered on Thursday, Dec. 11 in Duluth to honor victims of gun violence — the event was organized by the Northland Bray chapter with Protect Minnesota ahead of the Sandy Hook anniversary on Sunday, Dec. 14. WDIO
- ➤ Ascendance Truck Centers held its 17th annual Truckers for Tots campaign on Thursday, Dec. 11 at Duluth Fleet Farm, gathering toys for local kids that were later delivered to the Salvation Army. The event continues a community tradition begun by Mid-State Truck Services. WDIO

- ➤ House fires have increased this winter as dry air raises risks, with nearly 200 residential fires recorded in November and December over the past five years — fire officials advise checking smoke alarms and keeping space heaters away from flammable items. WDIO

- ➤ The Duluth Entertainment Convention Center named Jane Pederson Jandl as its new associate director of sales to drive revenue growth for events scheduled over the next 18 months. - ➤ The Lake Superior Zoo welcomes Canada Lynx brothers Bjorn and Floki (ages 6 and 7) from the Pittsburgh Zoo; they are already romping in the snow and exploring their new home. WDIO
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Minnesota DNR is auctioning 188 acres of rural land to boost local school funding through the Permanent School Fund. The auction, covering five parcels, runs through Dec. 16 and is expected to generate at least $300,000 for school programs. KSTP

- ➤ Arrowhead Transit will launch a new app next year that lets riders book trips from their phones. The app will roll out in spring with staff training and educational videos, as The Routing Company (Boston) sets up the system through a cooperative agreement with MnDOT. WDIO
