BUSINESS NEWS

  • ALLETE, Inc. is now part of Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Global Infrastructure Partners — the company will remain in Duluth under its current leadership. Shareholders will receive $67 per share in cash while stock trading was suspended on Monday before opening on the New York Stock Exchange.  BusinessNorth
  • ALLETE completed its acquisition on Monday, Dec. 15 (after state approval) promising $200M in benefits, including a one-year base rate freeze and $50M in credits for Minnesota Power customers in Duluth while preserving local leadership and planning a five-year grid expansion, with backing from CPP Investments and Global Infrastructure Partners.  WDIO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Northland serve more than 200 kids daily with a Lincoln Park teen center offering a music recording studio, esports lab, theater — and a cafe. It also provides a $20,000 Youth of the Year Scholarship that gives $5,000 per academic year to help teens plan for their future.  WDIO

  • Operation Taconite began on Dec. 10 to break ice and keep commercial traffic moving on the Northern Great Lakes – the Coast Guard Cutter SPAR is working in Duluth and Superior ports while more icebreakers are planned as conditions worsen.  WDIO
