  • U.S. Congressman Pete Stauber said Nippon Steel Corp. will invest $800 million in U.S. Steel’s Minnesota iron ore operations under a new partnership that is expected to boost the local steel industry and create jobs. The deal will bring $14 billion into the economy and is the largest investment in the taconite facilities (Minntac Mine and Keetac) ever.  BusinessNorth

CRIME NEWS

  • Cloquet police are asking the public for help finding Daniel Latterell, 64, and Jane Korpela, 63, who have been missing since Sunday near 1600 Cloquet Avenue and are believed to be in a 2010 gray Ford Escape with Minnesota license plate JEP512—officials are concerned for their mental health and safety.  KSTP

  • The Duluth Seaway Port Authority Board of Commissioners named Kevin Beardsley as the new executive director, and he will start on June 3 when Deb DeLuca retires. Born in Duluth and with over 30 years of financial experience (including serving as chief financial officer since 2014), he is set to lead major port projects and begin the search for his CFO replacement.  BusinessNorth
  • Legislative leaders warned working groups they had until Wednesday to reach a budget agreement — after missing the May 19 constitutional deadline and failing to finalize talks Tuesday after Memorial Day — or they would take over decision-making. Lawmakers now worry that stalled negotiations may lead to a special session if no deal is reached soon.  KSTP
