Minnesota Power asks for a 17.8% rate increase that would add about $24 a month to the average home bill

The interim increase would be smaller than the full request

If you're a Minnesota Power customer, the company has asked state regulators to approve a 17.8% rate increase. The average residential bill would rise about $24 a month if the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission approves the full request. It serves 150,000 customers in Northeast Minnesota, and its last request was in 2023.

The commission will set an interim 15% increase starting in January 2027, about $15 a month for homes. Bill credits will offset about 70% of that interim bump in 2027, and any overpayment gets refunded with interest if the final rate is lower. Fox21Online says the credits come from land sold near the company's hydro reservoirs.

  • Costs behind it: operations, workforce, grid upgrades, renewables, inflation
  • Eighth lowest: Minnesota's residential electric bills nationally, the company says

Two-thirds of its sales go to large industrial customers, and the company says idled mines hurt sales but not grid costs. It also says the request isn't tied to Google's . Northern News Now shares the company's response: Google has agreed to pay all costs necessary to power it.

Community Action Duluth appeals the state's push to strip its Community Action Agency status

is fighting the state's push to strip its Community Action Agency status. The Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families confirmed Friday that the nonprofit filed a formal appeal before the Oct. 31 deadline, sending the dispute to an administrative law judge. The Minnesota Court of Administrative Hearings will handle the proceedings.

$700,000in state and federal funding the de-designation threatened

The appeal halts the de-designation process, at least temporarily.

Earlier in the week, CAD had said it was prepared to accept de-designation if the state met conditions in writing. Board member Tim Meyer said the state didn't address four of them, so the board decided to appeal. The state says it would reimburse eligible expenses only if CAD stays in compliance.

“As of October 30, CAD has not received that clarification.”

Classie Dudley, executive director, Community Action Duluth
  • Owed, per Meyer: over $300K in reimbursements for completed work
  • Hearing: Minnesota Court of Administrative Hearings
  • Status: de-designation halted, at least temporarily

CAD moved from a conditional exit to a formal appeal

  1. Aug. 17CAD begins asking DCYF why payments remain withheld
  2. Oct. 26CAD tells DCYF it is prepared to accept de-designation, with conditions
  3. Oct. 28DCYF says it has not yet received a formal appeal request
  4. Oct. 30CAD files a formal appeal, and DCYF confirms it
  5. Oct. 31The state's deadline to appeal, set for 5 p.m.

Anyone missing this cat in hunters park?

“She is a girl and still just a kitten, she followed me on my walk today—I knocked on a couple of doors in the area but didn’t find an owner. It’s getting cold and I am happy to keep her since she followed me, but wanted to make sure no one was missing her. If she is yours let me know and we will get her back to you!”
